07 Jul 2025

President Advocate Duma Boko will tomorrow launch target 61 000 Constituency Housing Units in Palapye as part of government’s commitment to provide decent housing and foster social equity.

The launch marks the commencement of a journey toward attainment of 61 000 housing units made up of 1 000 units for the 61 constituencies in the country. Government is determined to achieve this milestone by building housing units over a period of two years through the Bonno National Housing Programme.

In an interview, the acting district commissioner Mr Tsholofelo Molobe said 700 plots had been secured for Palapye to facilitate construction of houses through the Bonno National Housing Programme. He explained that the remaining 300 plots which were needed to meet the 1 000 units per constituency would be allocated across the five villages that form Palapye constituency such as Topisi, Radisele, Mogome, Mokgware and Moreomabele.

Recently, the Minister of Water and Human Settlement, Mr Onneetse Ramogapi toured Extension 11 and Extension 7 in Palapye, which are sites where the housing units would be built. He also held meetings with different stakeholders emphasising the importance of the new housing programme.

Mr Ramogapi also stressed that the Bonno National Housing Programme was an overarching initiative that would deliver a variety of housing schemes tailored to meet the diverse needs of the population. Therefore, he said it was important that all the stakeholders in the constituency worked together to make the programme a success.

The programme encompasses a variety of housing schemes tailored to meet the diverse needs of the population, including the Bonno Home Improvement Loan Scheme aimed at completing, improving and renovating existing homes to improve their quality and livability.

It also has the Bonno Turnkey Development Loan Scheme where the adopted approach is a design and build method in which the government, through the Botswana Housing Corporation or private sector, undertakes the responsibility of constructing homes for eligible beneficiaries.

The other scheme is the Bonno D4 Scale and below or equivalent Housing Loan Scheme which is specifically designed to support the working class, targeting individuals earning within the range of the D4 salary scale (from P95 000 to P282 120 per annum). The objective is to facilitate homeownership for this income group. The scheme caters for both public and non-public officers at equivalent levels. ENDS
