Golf union to host tournament

11 Feb 2014

The Botswana Ladies Golf Union (BLGU) will hold this year’s triangular golf tournament for the A and B ladies division at Gaborone Golf Club before end of April.

Botswana, Zimbabwe and Zambia will participate in the triangular match plays tournament. In 2011, Zambia hosted the annual tournament in which Botswana came third in both divisions while in 2012, Zimbabwe hosted the tournament in which Botswana came second in the A division and third in the B division.

Botswana was supposed to hold the same tournament in 2013 but could not do so because of some technicalities and unforeseen circumstances. This was revealed by the BLGU president, Beke Mbakile, during the Jack and Jill fund raising tournament over the weekend.

The Jack and Jill golf tournament is where men and women are paired together. It usually involves one man and one woman pairing to form a two-person team but the weekend tournament involved four men and a woman.

Mbakile explained that the Jack and Jill tourney, though a fund raising event, was the first of its kind in Botswana, and was a preparation for the up-coming triangular match tournament.

She appealed to sponsors to help make the tournament a success. In June this year, the BLGU will send the women’s national team to take part in the All Challenge Trophy to Kenya.  The BLGU hosted the same tournament in 2012 in Phakalane in which 16 countries participated and Botswana came eighth.

This was a slight improvement from position 12 the country took in 2010 in Nigeria, in which 17 Africa countries participated. She said the BLGU was working around the clock to select the squad that would represent Botswana in this biennial tournament.

Meanwhile, the weekend Jack and Jill tournament saw the team of young Lorato Sankhuta, who was the Jill, and three men Jenamo Moeko, Bashi Billy and Katlholo Modumedisi being crowned the champions with 99 points.

Coming second with 97 points were Trevor Burnet, Andrew Botha, Taff Williams and Helen Williams (Jill) while the third position went to  Thomo Pule (Jill), Rodney Butau, Hama Kamanga and Moses Goto also with 97 points.

There were also prizes for the longest drive both for ladies and men which saw Tiny Kgathwane winning the longest drive prize in hole number 16 under the women’s category while Edwin Madibela won the men’s category longest drive in hole number 2. ENDS
