18 Jun 2025

The Kanye District Council (KyDC) is looking to unlock new revenue-generating opportunities by capitalising on the tourism potential of Kanye, which  is rich in history and natural beauty in order tackle funding shortfalls.

Council Chairperson Mr Morapedi Kgosithebe made the announcement at the opening of a full council meeting on Monday.

Additionally, he said the council was exploring partnerships with investors to reinvigorate the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model aimed at sustainable development through real estate and other ventures.

Mr Kgosithebe expressed the need for partnerships, advocating for Twinning Arrangements with other councils, both locally and globally, to enhance service delivery and resource utilisation.

He outlined several planned projects, including the BioGas initiative in Lorolwane and the Dipotsana commercial project, which have undergone comprehensive community consultations. Mr Kgosithebe emphasised the environmental advantages of utilising eco-friendly resources for clean energy.

He said as of the start of the 2024/2025 financial year, the council has registered 3 064 businesses under the trade statutes, with revenue from these enterprises exceeding expectations. Actual collections have reached P646 193 against a projected P581 000, marking a 111.2 per cent achievement. The early months of 2025/2026 also indicated positive collection trends.

Meanwhile the chairperson announced an increase in KyDC budget for the current financial year, totaling P184 090 347.

The budget is primarily sustained by a Revenue Support Grant (RSG) of P175 950 577, supplemented by an own-source of income of P8 139 770. This increase, he said underscored the council’s determination to enhance services and infrastructure, despite the ongoing economic challenges.

Mr Kgosithebe stressed that the budget increase aimed to support various initiatives that improve the quality of life for residents through investments in public services, community development, and infrastructure enhancements. He underscored the importance of strategic planning and effective resource allocation to meet community needs during these challenging times.

The chairperson highlighted that this budget increase reflected the recognition of local governance’s vital role in fostering resilience and driving economic recovery within communities.

Kgosithebe said the council had operated with a budget of P154 146 000 in the 2023/2024 financial year. For 2024/2025, the budget has risen by P22 182 521, totaling P176 328 521 -a 12 per cent increase. ENDS
