Council to undertake projects amid challenges
10 Jun 2025
Despite financial constraints, Serowe District Council will proceed with some of development projects planned for the current fiscal year, district council chairperson Mr Atamelang Thaga said during a council meeting in Serowe yesterday.
He said that the council faced increased financial difficulties because of the non-funding of programmes like Ipelegeng and School Feeding, which they had to now finance from council’s own resources. The chairperson said that council planned to maintain most of primary roads in Serowe as per the schedule for the financial year. He however said both the tarred and gravel roads damaged by recent heavy rains would not all be attended to, adding that council intended to focus on roads facilitating access to facilities like schools and clinics.
Further, Mr Thaga raised concerns on alarming increase of defilement cases in Serowe District. Additionally, he said that over 50 students withdrew from school because of pregnancy, mainly girls aged 13 to 15. He also said that juvenile delinquency and disorder were widespread and common in schools, calling for stricter measures to arrest the situation.
He urged councillors to engage constituents and collaborate with public educators on issues of child abuse, neglect, and other social problems, adding that children faced a bleak future if wayward behaviours and delinquency remained unaddressed. He called on parents to be present in their children’s lives, be their first role models and shape their behaviour from infancy. ENDS
