Private sector plays a crucial role in community development. Kgosi Tapoloso Mosika of Xhakaanare kgotla in Maun said this in an interview following the handover of a kgotla shelter, a two roomed office block, water system ablution and a 250 litres Jojo tank, a collective effort by some private companies and individuals. Kgosi Mosika acknowledged the private sector’s contribution to livelihood of communities.

“Everything from the ground breaking to the completion of the project was done voluntarily and this is a true testament that companies are not only committed to making profit,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of kgotla in Setswana set-up, saying it encouraged good governance, promoted culture and justice. Explaining how the project came about, he said Xhakaanare kgotla was established in 2018 due to the expansion of the Maun. To serve morafe, he worked under a tree since there was no structure in place.

Following his installation in 2023, he embarked on a mission to look for partners and donors who responded positively to his plea hence the projects. The projects started last year September and were completed in November same year. The government alone, he said, could not manage to implement all envisaged developmental projects and it is through collaboration and partnership that the country could realise the development agenda.

Kgosi Mosika challenged other companies to emulate the move. He also appealed to members of the community to trace their roots and revive the spirit of self-reliance, which he said was the cornerstone of driving community development projects in the past. ENDS
