School head calls for better parenting

09 Feb 2014

Good parenting should be part of each parent’s resolutions for the new year, according to Morama Junior Secondary School head, Ms Mpho Lesego.

Addressing a Parents Teachers Association meeting recently, Ms Lesego urged parents to exercise utmost responsibility and commitment towards their children’s lives and education.

“But make sure that you communicate such a resolution to your children because they also have their own interests which we have to accommodate,” she explained.

She emphasised the need for parents to introspect and assess their parenting in the previous year and work towards improvement every year. She said parents were crucial stakeholders in the education sector.

“Let’s strive to understand our children and their interests because often we don’t understand each other and this results in conflicts.

We should also acknowledge that they are a different generation from us and therefore raising them will not be the same as the way we were raised back then,” she noted.

She expressed concern at the low turnout even though it was the first PTA meeting of the year, saying such an attitude impacted negatively on the students performance.

On other issues, Ms Lesego noted that even though her school was well staffed, they had a shortage of notebooks and exercise books.

She said since the beginning of the year, they had been able to give students books for three subjects only.

She was however optimistic that the situation would normalise soon.

She further noted that they had not received all the text books for Form 1 students due to the delay from suppliers.

However, Ms Lesego explained that the ministry had resolved that procurement of text books will be done regionally to speed up the process.

Furthermore, the school head noted that their request for cyclic maintenance of the school had been successful and the process was expected to start soon. ENDS
