Moshupa council doubles down on disaster management
20 Mar 2025
As part of the long-term strategy to enhance public facilities, the Buildings Department in Moshupa District is conducting a thorough assessment of the condition of schools, clinics, staff houses, and other infrastructures following a heavy downpour that caused destruction in the area recently.
Addressing a full council meeting in Moshupa recently, Moshupa District Council chairperson Mr Peter Sethibe said the exercise aimed to identify defects and would be completed by the end of April 2025. Following this, he said data would be transformed into priced bills of quantities for repairs.
Mr Sethibe highlighted the damaging effects of the recent rains on the district’s road network. Highlighting the overall condition of Moshupa’s road infrastructure, Mr Sethibe noted the urgent need for various interventions including resurfacing, pothole patching, and repairs to drainage structures.
Despite challenges with funding and resources, the Council’s Roads Division has commenced emergency works and routine maintenance, with approximately 24.4km of roads already addressed. He noted that the recent floods in Moshupa had left 336 individuals directly affected, with many homes collapsing and businesses rendered inaccessible due to water damage.
He reported that the council’s response team acted swiftly to provide immediate relief to those impacted by the floods through provision of food baskets to affected families, tents for shelter, while some were relocated to residences with intact properties or alternative accommodations such as VDC housing. He acknowledged the extensive roof leakages in several schools, leading to ceiling collapses under the pressure of continuous rain.
“Fortunately, most school buildings have been repaired, allowing classes to resume following a brief suspension mandated by the government,” he said.
He noted that a comprehensive report detailing the flood’s impact, along with another on the district’s disaster preparedness, had been submitted to the National Disaster Management office. ENDS
