President Advocate Duma Boko and First Lady Kaone Boko laid wreaths in memory of the 45 victims of the Mmamatlakala tragedy during the official National Healing, Remembrance and Closure ceremony held in Molepolole today.
The ceremony brought together government leaders, community members, and families of the victims to honour those who lost their lives in the Mmamatlakala incident.
The National Healing, Remembrance and Closure ceremony is part of government efforts to address the emotional and social impact of the Mmamatlakala tragedy and to ensure that the victims are honored collectively by the nation.
First Lady, Ms Kaone Boko comforted the bereaved families by informing them that government has a duty to stand with bereaved families long after national tragedies fade from public attention.
Addressing the National Healing, Remembrance and Closure ceremony in Molepolole today, Mrs Boko said government responsibility does not end when emergency responders leave a disaster scene or when investigations are completed.
“The responsibility of government is fulfilled when those who continue to carry grief know they have not been abandoned and are not left to bear the burden alone,” she said.
She stressed that healing was a continuous process rather than a single event.
Ms Boko said the National Healing, Remembrance and Closure programme was established to ensure that families affected by tragedies receive continued care, recognition and support as they rebuild their lives. ENDS
