Kanaku community farm, funded at P4 million, is expected to be in full operation next month, Mabutsane District Council chairperson, Mr Tuelo Zulu told a full council meeting on Monday. To date, he said a total of 62 cattle have been stocked and more heifers and bulls were expected soon.

“Kanaku Farm focuses on beef production and a total of 62 cattle have been stocked with one mortality. A total of 38 heifers and four bulls are still to be stocked,” he said.

The 2 476 hectare farm was allocated to Kanaku community in 2012, and the project was funded from the 2017/18 financial year. Apart from the livestock, the farm also comprises developments such as solar equipped borehole, staff accommodation and ablution blocks.

On another project, Mr Zulu noted that the Kutuku Horticulture project was at the initial stages of implementation. “Kutuku field has been funded with P500 000 to start horticultural production and have been focusing on field crops which is still to continue being part of the project. The project is still at planning and procurement stages,” he noted.

The chairperson further said pre-feasibility and feasibility studies for the design and construction of 25 km internal roads in Mabutsane village were complete. He noted that the studies were presented to the stakeholders for approval before proceeding to design stage last year. ENDS

Designs were shared with council in December 2024 and council provided the consultant with cadastral map and comments on the design on February 14, 2025,”he said.

Responding to the chairperson’s speech in an interview, Mabutsane/Kanaku councillor, Mr Keberekile Pule said he was concerned about the general state of the roads in the district. He said the Jwaneng-Maokane road should be prioritised in order to enhance developments for the communities.

“ Maokane road is a concern for our district, it is not easy to travel on that road particularly during the raining season,” he said. ENDS
