BEC releases 2024 JCE results

The Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) yesterday released the 2024 Junior Certificate Examination  results

A press release from BEC says 38.57 percent of the 45,284 candidates who sat for the 2024 JCE achieved grades C or better, compared to 37.10 percent in 2023.

Furthermore, the release highlights that the overall proportion of candidates who obtained grades E or better rose to 85.54 per cent, up from 83.10 percent in the previous year. The results indicate a significant improvement in the performance of government school candidates.

According to the press release, "The overall performance of government schools only, the results for the 2024 JCE cohort indicate that the proportion of candidates obtaining credit grades; grades C or better is at 38.57 percent compared to 37.10 percent in 2023, indicating an improvement of 1.47 percent. The proportion of candidates obtaining pass grades; grades E or better is at 85.54 per cent compared to 83.10 percent in 2023, indicating a significant improvement of 2.44 percent."

For all candidates, including both government and private students, the results showed that 36.28 per cent achieved credit passes, a rise from 34.24 percent in 2023. The percentage of candidates obtaining grades E or better also increased to 81.66 percent, compared to 77.79 percent in the prior year.

The breakdown of results reveals that 16 candidates obtained Merit, 613 received grade A, 4 790 received grade B, 10 899 achieved grade C, 14 458 obtained grade D, 5 410 received grade E, while 6 107 candidates were ungraded. In comparison, the previous year had eight candidates achieving Merit, 440 receiving grade A, 4 326 earning grade B, 10 541 achieving grade C, 13 834 receiving grade D, 5 166 achieving grade E, and 6 860 ungraded.

The press release further notes that results for candidates who did not meet the grading requirements were marked with the letter "X," which is a temporary status that will be addressed during the inquiries about results period.

 

Among the candidates, 22 278 were male, while 22 977 were female, with females outperforming their male counterparts. ENDS
