Yesterday, Mmopane–Metsimotlhabe Member of Parliament, Ms Helen Manyeneng visited families affected by recent heavy rainfalls in Mmopane to assess the extent of damages.
The MP who is the deputy speaker of Parliament, said it was important to get first-hand information and see the extent of the damage.
This, she said would enable her to give an informed report to disaster unit at the Office of the President and identify those in urgent need of assistance. She said though government was facing financial constraints, she was hopeful that through discussions with relevant authorities there could be a solution.
Regarding the inadequate storm water drainage system, particularly related to the recently constructed internal roads, she expressed disappointment that the contractor had not installed sufficient drainage system.
She said that flooding has been a persistent problem in Mmopane since the roads construction. She said the issue had been previously raised with the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Noah Salakae and expects the ministry to take action.
In an interview, Mr Eric Phiri shared his frustrations about the new internal road, stating that the lack of a storm-water drainage system had resulted in water pooling in his yard.
Ms Naome Ngakane described the absence of proper drainage as a nightmare, recounting how her home was flooded during the recent rains, necessitating the use of a water pump to mitigate the situation.
She said she nearly lost all her household belongings due to the flooding. Ms Olebogeng Pheko also lamented the lack of storm water drainage and urged the government to expedite the construction of a proper system, emphasising that the recent rains should serve as a wake-up call for the authorities.
Additionally, 21-year-old Lesego Metlhaleng and 20-year-old Tlhalosang Motseothata, who were injured when a storm struck their home last Thursday, said in an interview that they were recovering well and had received a tent for shelter while awaiting further assistance.
Mr Letlampona Mokgalajwe said that he needed P21 000 to replace a roof on his two-bedroom house that was damaged by the storm, and he mentioned that he will also need additional money to repair the ceiling. ENDS
