GA invests in responsible gambling
17 Dec 2024
The Gambling Authority (GA) has made significant strides in 2024, as detailed by Chief Executive Officer Mr Emolemo Kesitilwe.
Briefing BOPA on the year’s key highlights, he said the Authority issued 16 new licenses, 10 for betting sites and six for Limited Payout Machine Establishments (LPMS), reflecting commitment to a structured licensing process.
Recognising that gambling was an ever-evolving sector, he emphasised the Authority’s need to remain informed and proactive regarding all strategic issues facing the industry.
In line with this, the Motshameko O Phepa Scholarships were awarded to 11 postgraduate students, reinforcing the partnership between the Gambling Authority and the University of Botswana.
This initiative aims to promote a knowledge-based economy. Since May 2023, the Authority conducted a series of Regulatory Impact Assessment (RIA) consultative meetings, leading to a decision to revise Gaming and Gambling Policy, with the updated policy expected to be finalised by April 2025.
In terms of recognition, Mr Kesitilwe noted that the Gambling Authority was honoured with the Best Responsible Gambling Programme award at the Gaming Tech Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, and achieved third place in the parastatals category at the 2024 Consumer Fair.
He reiterated the Authority’s emphasis on community engagement, highlighting initiatives such as the launch of a Self-Help Portal (both website and USSD services), introduction of SMS competitions, and approved promotional competitions.
Such efforts, he said, demonstrated the Authority’s commitment to maintaining active communication and interaction with the community.
These achievements underline the Gambling Authority’s dedication to responsible gambling practices, regulatory improvements, and educational support, setting the stage for future advancements in the gaming sector, he said. ENDS
