Kang water supply exceeds demand

15 Dec 2024

Kang has more than enough water supply, despite a small total storage capacity of 400 cubic metres.

The supply is currently at 668 cubic metres per day against a demand of 588 cubic metre per day, resulting in a surplus of 120 cubic metre per day, Assistant Minister of Water and Human Settlement, Mr Motsamai Motsamai told Parliament on Thursday.

He said the surplus was bowsed to Hukuntsi to relieve water shortage at Macheng villages of Lokgwabe, Lehututu, Tshane and Hukuntsi.

Mr Motsamai indicated that a 1 000 cubic metre storage tank was proposed in the previous financial years’ budgets, but could not be included due to the limited budget.

The water supply challenges are sometimes experienced by wards further from the tanks because the existing tanks are supported by nine-metre high stands, not high enough to create sufficient pressure to reach further areas in Kang, Mr Motsamai said.

He said the proposed new tank would be mounted on a 15m stand, to increase water pressure across the village.

Mr Motsamai said the frequent BPC electricity outages, which this year, on average weekly, impacted the two main borehole operations contributed to water shortage in some areas.

He said a solar powered system would be considered in the future as an alternative power source.

MP for Kgalagadi North, Mr Reason Lekutlane, wanted the minister to state if he was aware that Kang had sufficient water supply, but the problem was insufficient water storage.

He also wanted him to state when the ministry intended to rectify the problem, given the rationing and existing shortage in some parts of the village. ENDS
