Contractor delays completion of police station
11 Dec 2024
Non-performance of a contractor who was engaged in the construction of a police station in Maitengwe has been blamed for its delay.
Responding to a question in Parliament, Minister for State President, Mr Moeti Mohwasa said the project commenced on October 4, 2017 and was originally expected to be completed May 7, 2021 but was extended to August 20, 2021.
The minister explained that in response to the slow performance of the contractor, mitigation measures such as extension of time and direct payments of suppliers for materials used on site were employed but the contractor failed to complete the works.
“Formalities are underway to finalise termination of the contract,” Minister Mohwasa said. He said the ministry was aware of unpaid salaries of security guards at Maitengwe Police Station, and it was expected that they would be settled before the end of December.
He explained that the Ministry had resolved to use the contractor’s retention money to pay all the owed employees, and this was done with confirmation and approval of the contractor. Nkange MP, Mr Mothaleemang Moalosi had asked the minister to state progress of Maitengwe police station and its original completion date.
He had wanted to know causes of the delay, and what steps were being taken to complete the project.
The legislator had also asked the minister if he was aware that the security guards at the police station had not been paid for 24 months, and what was being done to resolve the matter. Ends
