Solar plant to boost salt mine

24 Oct 2024

Zutshwa Salt Mine in Hukuntsi District is set to benefit from the transformative Zutshwa smart village solar plant donated by HUAWEI Group working in partnership with government.

The 30 kVa off-grid photovoltaic power station is set to boost Zutshwa’s economic bedrock of a salt mine amongst other economic activities in the village.

Qhaa Qhing Conservation Trust general manager Mr David Tlhage, who is responsible for Zutshwa salt project, said they have been connected to the new solar grid and it was working well and has already started to boost business.

He said the new solar power station launched by President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi on Wednesday would facilitate them to be able to comfortably expand business by using heavy machinery which they could not use due to power supply limitations.

Currently, the Zutshwa Salt Project which employs a total of 25 people, is one of the business wings of Qhaa Qhing Conservation Trust.

The project came into existence in 1989, initiated by Rural Industry Innovation Centre (RICC), and started operations in 1991 with the assistance of Cooperation for Research Development and Education.

During Financial Year 2021/2022, a total of 880 tonnes (880 000 kg) per annum were produced. On average, monthly production stands at 1466 bags of 50kg.

The current production capacity is not able to fulfil the demand in the market, especially for major clients like Botswana Meat Commission, Botswana Agricultural Marketing Board, and Tholo Holdings. ENDS
