Government has introduced irrigation packages under the Temo Letlotlo and Impact Accelerator Subsidy programmes to deal with challenges posed by climate change that include extreme temperatures and unpredictable rainfall that lead to persistent drought.
Speaking during the Flo-Tek Farmers Day in Francistown on October 6, Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Mr Molebatsi Molebatsi said the packages included components like Centre Pivot Systems, movable and fixed sprinklers, double drip systems, borehole pumps and solar power solutions.
The assistant minister explained that the components were vital for enhancing productivity and ensuring sustainable farming practices in the country.
Mr Molebatsi therefore, commended Flo-Tek for playing a significant role in the growth of Botswana’s agricultural sector through its manufacturing and supply of various agricultural products. He said the manufacturing sector was a key priority for government by creating employment and boosting the economy.
Mr Molebatsi said Flo-Tek currently employs 750 citizens and this showcases its dedication to job creation and it stands as the largest manufacturer of plastic pipes in Southern Africa with a production of 35 000 tonnes annually.
Furthermore, he said in partnership with NETAFIM, a global leader in irrigation solution, Flo-Tek had been supplying innovation products to farmers in Botswana for the past decade adding that the collaboration had significantly contributed to agricultural growth in Botswana. He commended Flo-Tek and NETAFIM for their commitment to training farmers in modern irrigation techniques, which increase yields and support profitable farm management. “This initiative exemplifies a successful Public-Private Partnership, aligning with the government’s agenda to promote private sector participation in the economy,” he said.
As a vital contributor to Botswana’s farming sector, he said Flo-Tek continues to support farmers by providing training in various agricultural techniques. Mr Molebatsi said these techniques are invaluable for enhancing skills and knowledge ultimately contributing to the commercialisation of the national agriculture.
He urged Flo-Tek to maintain its leadership in the plastic products manufacturing sector by embracing innovation particularly in relation to green policies as the growing global demand for environmentally friendly products calls for a focus on sustainable manufacturing practices.
North East District Agricultural coordinator, Mr Gwilidzani Maposa, said government had prioritised agriculture to empower Batswana and improve the socio-economic status.
He said there were about seven programmes that benefited from the Impact Accelerator Subsidy that were successful and advised that instead of criticising programmes, people should use them.
The Managing Director of Chenin Blanc Horticulture, Ms Angela Urio said they started their farm as a hobby and it eventually developed into a business.
Ms Urio noted that their mission was to produce good quality vegetables and to create opportunities that were impactful to the people around them in terms of sustainable employment. “We also want to provide food for ourselves, other people,” she said.
The Technical Advisor for Southern African Development Community (SADC), Mr Johann Cronje, emphasised on the quality of products and advised them not to fall for cheaper ones as they were of poor standard. ENDS
