Construction of the long awaited 33km Motopi-Makalamabedi road has commenced and is expected to be complete by August 2025.
The road project launched by Vice President Slumber Tsogwane in Motopi on Wednesday was described as a significant milestone in country’s infrastructure development.
“This project is key in enhancing the development of Boteti. We all need to take advantage of projects such as this and mobilise for building sustainable livelihoods,” he said.
The Vice President said the project was also a sign of commitment and resolve by the government to develop the country into a hub for the sustainable delivery of goods, services and technological advancements, as well as influencing developments at regional level.
Furthermore, Mr Tsogwane observed that the road project created employment opportunities as the contractor, Estate Construction, a citizen owned company, had already employed 154 people, of which only 3 were non-citizens while 151 were citizens.
From the 151 employed citizens, 67 are from Motopi, while 6 are from Makalamabedi.
Mr Tsogwane highlighted that there were other road projects earmarked for implementation such as the 22km Thamaga-Kubung, 25km Moshupa-Manyana and 14km Rakops-Xere.
Minister of Transport and Public Works, Mr Eric Molale said a deliberate decision was made to develop the second transitional development plan, running from April 2023 to March 2025, and would see among others timely delivery of projects and within budget.
As the contractor is already on site, Mr Molale appealed to the community to desist from vandalising equipment used in the project as this could delay progress.
Kgosi Baletanye Kenewendo of Motopi said the construction of Motopi-Makalamabedi road was a welcome development.
He said the people of Boteti had long wanted a tarmac road that linked Motopi and Makalamabedi, as the gravel road was not user friendly. Ends
