In a show of trust and responsibility, election officials gathered on Monday at the North East District Council for training ahead of the upcoming general elections.
Council's secretary, Mr Leboile Israel, emphasised that being selected as part of the polling staff reflected the trust invested in them, highlighting the sensitive nature of elections and the impact they have on the governance of the country.
“This selection comes with a high responsibility and should not be taken lightly,” Mr Israel said.
He urged trainees to pay close attention to instructions provided during training, warning that any inaccuracies or mistakes could lead to delays, potentially resulting in costly re-runs and recounts.
Mr Israel encouraged all participants to familiarise themselves with essential statutes, such as the Constitution, Electoral Act, and Local Government Act.
“If there’s anything you don’t understand, seek clarity, especially regarding your roles and the legal provisions relevant to election day,” he said.
For her part, Chief Elections Officer Ms Patricia Mmoloke reiterated the uniqueness of each general election, noting that no two elections were alike.
“Every election has its challenges, and the political landscape is always changing,” she said.
She urged officials to exhibit professionalism throughout the electoral process and to treat the Electoral Act as a vital guide, akin to their second Bible.
Additionally, Ms Mmoloke reminded participants of their visibility, as their names have been published in the government gazette.
During the nomination process, she stressed the importance of verifying the validity of identity cards and proof of payment, warning that failure to comply would render the process invalid.
Mr Lopang Pelekekae, Deputy Manager of the Independent Electoral Commission, addressed concerns regarding voting accessibility.
He stated that individuals inside the perimeter fence after the designated election time should still be allowed to vote.
However, he clarified that such discretion would lie with the presiding officer and would only be applicable in exceptional circumstances, such as large crowds or natural disasters that impede voting. North East District Commissioner Ms Wame Samapipi expressed her gratitude to the participants. “The responsibility now rests in your hands,” she stated.
She encouraged the officials to collaborate effectively and seek guidance whenever needed, commending their active participation and eagerness to engage during the training sessions. Ends
