The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has recorded a satisfying number of voters for the 2024 general elections in the three constituencies that fall under the Okavango District.
This overview was provided by the IEC Secretary, Mr Jefferson Siamisang, when briefing the Okavango District Council during a Special Full Council meeting recently. Mr Siamisang said the Ngami constituency registered 12 180 voters, while Okavango East registered 10 131 voters and Okavango West registered 11 365 voters.
However, Mr Siamisang noted that a portion of these registrations faced rejection due to duplicates, as some individuals had registered in multiple locations.
Mr Siamisang said that Ngami registered 61 rejected cases, Okavango East had 37 rejected while Okavango West had 50 rejected cases.
He added that the three constituencies had recorded fewer number of voters who sought to transfer to different constituencies, which he said was a sign that people adhered to the requirement to register at their primary residence.
Mr Siamisang thanked the Okavango District leadership for sharing information and availing resources to realise a positive outcome during the elections voting process.
He said the IEC was prepared to conduct the general elections as provided for by the Constitution, that elections be held every five years. Mr Siamisang said nationally the IEC registered 1 380 261 which was 80 per cent of their target. ENDS
