Tlokweng begins new shopping centre construction

01 Sep 2024

Construction of the P36million Tlokweng Taxi Rank and Shopping Centre is billed to start next week.

Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony on Wednesday, Tlokweng District Council (TDC) chairperson, Mr Collen Mochotlhi said the project, born out of a dynamic partnership between the council and Time Projects (Pty) Ltd, was not only laying the physical foundation of a new taxi rank and commercial hub, but also planting the seeds of economic growth, social development and community empowerment.

“First and foremost, this project seeks to develop public transport infrastructure by establishing a modern taxi rank in Tlokweng. For too long, our community has operated with outdated facilities that do not meet the growing demands of our people. The new taxi rank will not only provide a safe and efficient transport hub, but also enhance the overall commuting experience for thousands of our residents and visitors,” said Mr Mochotlhi. He added that the new development would support the informal sector by providing dedicated stalls for local businesses.  He noted that the sector played a crucial role in the local economy, offering employment and income-generating opportunities to many.

He noted that by creating a space where small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) could thrive was giving entrepreneurs the chance to grow their businesses, increase their income and contribute to the economic vitality of Tlokweng.

“Once completed, the facilities will serve as a critical support system for the informal sector. With dedicated stalls and commercial spaces, our local entrepreneurs will have the infrastructure they need to conduct their businesses in a more organised and efficient manner.

This will not only improve the quality of goods and services available to our residents, but also enhance the village aesthetics and reputation of Tlokweng as a hub for commerce and trade,” he said.

He added that the project was not just a facility, but a beacon of hope and a testament to what could be achieved when public and private sectors join hands for the common good.

“The project is a shining example of how these partnerships can work effectively to bring about sustainable development. By leveraging the strengths of both the public and private sectors, we have been able to achieve outcomes that would not have been possible through traditional methods of infrastructure development,” he said.

For his part, Time Projects property director, Mr Mmoloki Morolong promised to deliver on their mandate on the set dates and time.

He said his company, which was incorporated in 1986, had a reputable record of delivering on their projects, and that it was the country’s leading property developer.

He said during construction about 100 jobs would be created and over 150 job opportunities expected post construction.

He noted that they had worked with local authorities, corporate bodies and individuals in the past, and that they were satisfied with their projects which were delivered timely and of high quality.

He promised the local authority that material for the development of the project would be sourced locally, and that despite the scarcity of land at the site they intended to deliver as best as they could. Ends
