Ghanzi Horse Race Catalyst for economic cultural growth

30 Jul 2024

The Ghanzi horse race has shown potential to provide economic benefits, cultural significance, and thrilling entertainment, according to Ms Keitumetse Setlang, Chief Executive Officer of Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO).

In a recent interview, Ms Setlang highlighted that the horse race had attracted a diverse array of spectators, indicating that with proper administration, the event could reach its full potential in the near future.

She emphasised that events such as the Ghanzi Show possesed the capability to draw local and regional visitors, thereby increasing tourism in the Ghanzi area.

This influx of tourists could open new revenue streams and create job opportunities for local communities, she said.

As the primary sponsors of the horse race, BTO has aligned their sponsorship with the organisation’s goal of showcasing Botswana’s diverse attractions, a move that will promote local tourism.

Ms Setlang praised the impressive animal management skills displayed by horse owners throughout the event, urging them to maintain such high standards to elevate horse racing as a celebrated spectacle. She also stressed the importance of ensuring the safety and welfare of jockeys and spectators to ensure the sport’s continued growth.

Ghanzi North MP, Mr Johane Thiite, urged local communities to embrace a mindset shift towards commercialising horse rearing for personal and communal development rather than solely for domestic use.

Mr Tymon Kelebeng, president of Botswana Horse Racing Association and representative from TT Stables, commended the Ghanzi Show organising committee for responding positively to their requests by establishing an appropriate race track. He also expressed gratitude to BTO for consistent support of the Ghanzi horse race and encouraged more sponsors to contribute, which would allow for better prizes and incentives for jockeys and horse owners.

Kelebeng further announced that the association is committed to formalising a horse racing code to enhance safety and improve event administration. Discussions are underway with the Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture, as well as the Botswana Sport Council, to recognise horse racing as an official sporting code in the country.

The Ghanzi horse race featured seven exhilarating races.

Highlights included the 800m Tswana breed race won by Magic Hunt, the 1,600m thoroughbred race clinched by Montana Sky, and Sea Ways taking the victory in the 1,400m thoroughbred event.

The 1,200m Tswana race and another 1,200m thoroughbred race culminated with the grand 2,400m thoroughbred race won by Western Bypass, showcasing the excitement and talent present in the region. Ends
