The contribution rate has been reduced from 5 to 3.5 per cent of the Gross Gambling Revenue (GGR), with immediate effect.

Briefing BOPA on the development Thursday, Gambling Authority (GA), Director Gambling and Corporate Affair, Mr Moruntshi Kemorwale said the casino industry licensees have celebrated the move, expressing their appreciation for government’s responsiveness to their concerns.

“They have highlighted that the reduced contributions will enable them to reinvest in their operations, improve customer experience, and further enhance their responsible gambling initiatives,” he said.

He explained that the decision to reduce contributions came after an extensive consultations with stakeholders in the gambling industry, particularly casino operators, who have been advocating for the adjustment.

He said the ministry of trade emphasised that the reduction aimed to balance the financial viability of gambling operators with the commitment to responsible gambling practices.

“The objective is to ensure a sustainable and thriving gambling industry in Botswana that upholds the highest standards of responsible gambling.

He further noted that the Authority believed the adjustment would provide much-needed relief to operators while maintaining its dedication to safeguarding the wellbeing of the community.

Mr Kemorwale said the Gambling Authority remained committed to monitoring and supporting responsible gambling practices across all sectors, adding that they would continue to work closely with licensees to ensure that responsible gambling remained a priority, even with the reduced contribution rate.

Notably, he said the Authority was dedicated to regulating and overseeing the gambling industry in Botswana.
