Botswana has established diplomatic relations with Mongolia, Tajikistan and Saint Lucia.
The relations were authenticated during a signing ceremony recently at the Permanent Mission of Botswana to the United Nations (UN) in New York.
A press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the establishment of diplomatic relations between Botswana and the three countries was operationalised by the signing of Joint Communiqués by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Lemogang Kwape and the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Mongolia, Mr Amartuvshin Gombosuren, Permanent Representatives of Tajikistan and St Lucia to the UN, Mr Jonibek Hikmat and Ms Menissa Rambally, respectively.
It says Botswana and Mongolia share common interests and endeavour to strengthen Bilateral and Multilateral Cooperation anchored on already existing and close working relations within the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) at the UN.
“In the same vein, formalisation of relations between Botswana and Tajikistan is of great importance due to shared interests at the bilateral level and at the UN where the two countries are strongly committed to the LLDCs agenda,” says the media release. The release says diplomatic relations with Saint Lucia, a Caribbean country will unlock opportunities for cooperation based on shared interests, principles and ideals.
The establishment of relations with the three countries follows government’s recent decision to establish diplomatic relations with 34 countries as part of the efforts to advance Botswana’s interests abroad. ENDS
