25 Sep 2023

At least two drivers died while one is hospitalised following a tragic accident that involved five trucks along the Trans Kalahari Corridor (TKC) on Friday.

A press release from TKC secretariat in Windhoek states that the road crash which occurred at Bere on the Trans Kalahari Corridor involved Namibian registered and two Botswana registered trucks.

“One truck unfortunately burnt to ashes and its registration and the identity of the driver is yet to be determined,” states the release.

It says TKCS is in constant communication with authorities in Botswana who confirmed that five trucks were involved and at least two drivers died with one hospitalised.

The release states that the road crash was a result of poor visibility caused by fire that was raging along the road. “The first two trucks collided due to poor visibility and the rest then piled on them. The public is informed that the road has been cleared and opened for use.”

Furthermore, the release says, TKCS encourages drivers not to take unnecessary risk when driving.

“It is always important to be safe and take calculated decisions that would promote road safety. The TKCS is currently working on development of road incident management standards on transportation of dangerous goods.”

The release states that the standards will allow member states to forge strategic partnerships on the management of road incidents that involved dangerous goods.

TKCS continues to work on driver education as well as hold Joint Law Enforcement Operations in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa on a rotational basis where drivers are further engaged on road safety matters, says the release.

The TKCS conveyes heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, governments and citizens of the TKC as well as to the companies involved. Ends
