With the national voter registration billed for the entire month of November, an official from the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has urged all that are eligible to vote to register in their respective localities to avoid voter trafficking.
Principal Election Officer for IEC Selebi Phikwe, Mr Lesang Molome said one needed to register in the constituency and polling district in which they had a principal residence.
Mr Molome told BOPA that registration would be conducted in all the 21 and 24 polling stations in Selebi Phikwe West and Selebi Phikwe East respectively.
He explained that since the town’s population was over 40 000, it had two constituencies comprising seven wards each as in the 2019 general election.
He stated that as a consequence of the demarcation exercise, there had been adjustments to some areas, including dissolution of Botshabelo North ward, as per the residents’ submissions during the demarcation exercise consultation.
He said part of the ward was incorporated into Botshabelo West and Botshabelo East.
In place of Botshabelo North, he said the demarcation committee created a new ward named New Stands.
He explained that in the 2019 general elections a total of 9 302 and 8 092 registered to vote in Selebi Phikwe East and Selebi Phikwe West respectively.
He urged the residents of Selebi Phikwe to take advantage of the first voter registration because supplementary voter registration was not guaranteed. Ends
