Mental health government priority

06 Sep 2023

The government has adopted the mental health bill as a way of protecting people with mental health challenges.

This was revealed by the Member of Parliament for Francistown South, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi when addressing residents of Somerset Extension on Tuesday.

Mr Mmolotsi revealed that society takes advantage of people who are mentally challenged by engaging in vices such as unconsented sexual relations with them.

He advised residents to refrain from doing so and report such culprits as they violate the rights of other people.

On other issues, Mr Mmolotsi said, another concern is that siblings sell their departed parents’ houses, leaving themselves homeless and broke.

To solve the problem in his area of jurisdiction, Mr Mmolotsi announced his collaboration with Mmohe Attorneys to assist constituents in making wills that prohibit children from selling inherited property.

He said this will help to ensure that property is not sold but rather inherited by the next generation.

Earlier on when delivering welcome remarks Ward Chairperson, Mr Simisane Ramaotwana, said attack by illegal immigrants in their surroundings is a concern as now people live in fear.

As a result, he advised parents to take care of their children as the streets are no longer safe.

Mr Ramaotwana also said drug abuse cases were rising in the ward and this leads to poor mental health among the youth.

For his part, Acting Station Commander for Kutlwano Police, Assistant Supt Kealeboga Mmereki, urged residents to stop harboring criminals in their homesteads but rather report them to the police so that the environment can be conducive for everyone.

He also said residents to report police officers who do not perform according to expectations to avoid poor service delivery. ENDS
