'Embrace mindset change in sports'

04 Sep 2023

The proceeds of a one-day fund raising sporting event by Bokgoni Sorting Club will donated to Bagodi Charity Organisation at Malaka in the Tswapong area.

Speaking at an annual community day organised by Bokgoni Sporting Club in Francistown on Saturday, Club Coordinator, Mr Mothusi Kenosi, said they will donate washing baskets and other accessories to the elders of Bagodi Charity Organisation. He explained that part of the proceeds will be also used for funding a career guidance workshop for the unemployed youth of Francistown. Bokgoni Sporting Club, is a youth group dedicated to engaging the young people in Somerset East/Extension in healthy behavioural change activities with a focus on sports.

He said the fund raising activity was the third to be undertaken by club since 2018 to date before being disrupted COVID-19 in 2019.

He said the 2022 proceeds were used to buy school shoes for Mahube Primary School children and a wheel chair donated to one of the less privileged resident of Francistown.

Part of the proceeds, he added, were also used to buy sanitary pads for Maradu Primary School children and blankets to the elderly of Francistown.

Mr Kenosi also said this year's fund raising activity was in accord with President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi' re-set agenda, especially the mind-set change campaign, hence themed “Advocating for Youth mind-set change.” "Mind-set change has a huge factor in sports development, both on an individual and team level," he added.

He said the mind-set, a belief that abilities can be developed through hard work and persistence, can lead to greater motivation, resilience, and success in sports.

“A positive mind-set, which includes optimism and self-confidence, can lead to improved performance and a greater likelihood of achieving goals in sports,” Kenosi said.

He said sporting events have a significant positive impact among the youth by keeping them busy away from social ills such as drug abuse.

"By keeping them busy with sport, they (youth) spend time to share positive ideas with each other," he added.

He said sporting activities have the power to bring people together and build community and is a vehicle for social change and activism.

“Sports promote teamwork, communication, and leadership skills and it is a great way to stay physically fit and improve coordination and agility,” he said.

Kenosi said the event went as planned even though there was other competing events.

Participating clubs included Selolwane Rangers Netball Club from Tutume, Kasi Angels Netball Club from Mabudzani as well as Bokgoni Sporting Netball Club in Francistown. There was also a five aside football games from local teams, horse demonstration by Koronyane farm, and Karate performances. ends
