Maintenance works will soon start on the 70-kilometre Sepopa-Mohembo highway following contract signing between the government and the contractor on Tuesday.
Government has given the P280 million project to Rockefeller Civil Engineering.
Speaking at the signing of the contract, Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, Mr Bareng Malatsi, said the project, whose scope of works would include shoulder reinstatement and construction of access roads to some villages along the highway, was expected to be complete by December 2024.
Mr Malatsi said contract signing was aimed at improving service delivery and building transparency between contracting parties.
He added that award of projects to the private sector, was government’s way of empowering them, hence the expectation for them to deliver.
Mr Malatsi urged the company to build a relationship with the communities in the area and adhere to labour laws.
A representative of the company, Mr Leatile Moletsane, said they were committed to completing the project on time and would consider employing people from among communities along the highway.
Giving a vote of thanks, Okavango District Council Chairperson, Mr Gaopalelwe Ronald, urged the company to follow labour laws to the book when hiring and paying employees.
He also encouraged community members who would be employed to work hard. ENDS
