Climate change should take centre stage - MP

Gaborone South MP, Mr Kagiso Molatlhegi, has said climate change needs to take centre stage when issues of environment are discussed.
Responding to the President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama’s State-of-the-Nation Address in Parliament, Mr Molatlhegi said he was concerned that the President did not mention climate change in his speech when he talked about environment issues.
Climate change, Mr Molatlhegi said, posed a serious threat on the environment as a whole, especially the agricultural sector.
For that reason, he said it was important that Batswana could had been enlightened more on its seriousness and its impact on their lives. Recently, Mr Molatlhegi said there was United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change held in Warsaw, Poland, where countries converged to discuss issues of climate change.
This meeting, he said stressed on the importance of fostering agricultural development and food security in Southern Africa to reduce the effects of climate change.The MP commended government for sticking to its promise of coming up with a comprehensive policy on climate change focusing mainly on Botswana case.
He said talks surrounding the policy document had already kicked off and said he had an opportunity to attend the inception meeting, where he advised officials that information be put in such a way that every Motswana would relate with its context. Ends
