Choppies Chain Store has been commended for ploughing back to the community by building houses for the underprivileged members of society.
Choppies was hailed for the gesture that restored people’s dignity.
The Vice President, Mr Slumber Tsogwane, said during the handing over of a two bedroomed house worth P120 000 to Ms Gabaratane John of Moremaoto in his Boteti West constituency on Friday.
Mr Tsogwane said Choppies demonstrated that it was not only interested in making profit but also in the welfare of the people.
He said Choppies created job opportunities for the youth in Botswana, adding that it brought competition and change in the retail space as Batswana saw a reduction in food commodities since it started operation.
For her part, the Constituency Administrator, Ms Bridget Shaka, stated that Mr Tsogwane solicited financial support from different companies to build a shelter for Ms John and Choppies came to their rescue.
Ms Shaka hailed the commitment demonstrated by Choppies Chain Stores towards restoring the dignity of members of the society.
The Lee Family, business enterpreneurs based in Gaborone donated furniture to Mrs John.
Choppies representative Ms Kebatsholetse Thitjoro stated that as Choppies Chain Store, they took pride in the initiative of building shelters for members of the community, as they believed that people across the country especially those who came from disadvantaged and vulnerable backgrounds deserved a dignified life.
Ms Thitjoro said Choppies had grown as a home brand in Botswana and spread its wings to several African nations and had become a significant retailer represented in the sub-Saharan African market.
She indicated that Choppies had 98 stores being super stores, value stores and hyper markets in Botswana employing about 6000, making it the biggest employer after the government of Botswana.
The continued growth of Choppies, she said, would not have been possible without the continued support of its valued customers as well as the employees.
Ms Thitjoro stated that close to half a million Pula had gone to towards building shelters for underprivileged members of society, noting that it was their intention to ensure that health, housing and educational needs of people were met in a more sustainable manner.
She implored Ms John to take good care of the house and make sure that it remained in good state. Ends
