Naledi senior community raises funds

29 May 2023

Naledi Senior Secondary School community took to the streets of Gaborone around Game City to promote a healthy lifestyle and raise funds for the school’s upcoming prize-giving ceremony.

In an interview during the charity marathon on Saturday, the school head Mr Othusitse Othusitse said they saw the need to engage learners in an activity that would result in a double-win effect citing the health benefits derived from the charity event and proceeds that would go towards the school’s prize giving activity scheduled for September 2. He said the event also encouraged teamwork and friendly competition among pupils and they competed with support from teachers and parents.

Mr Othusitse further said incorporating physical activity into the curriculum provided opportunities for outdoor activities, adding that working with families and local organisations created a supportive and encouraging environment.

The organiser and member of the prize-giving committee Ms Shermy Motlhabane said the charity marathon provided a much-needed spark by pupils together with educators and parents to interact on a different level.

She encouraged pupils to engage in physical activities for improved and enhanced mental wellbeing and consider it as a boost to academic performance as it enhanced cognitive function.

For his part, the 1978 alumni representative of Naledi Mr Isaiah Dipholo said they saw the need to be part of the event as they were the first cohort at the school adding that even 46 years after, they were still part of the school that groomed them to be what they were today.

He said as the group they were delighted to give back to the community.

The first 30 pupils to complete the eight kilometres run were awarded a medal as an incentive and recognition for participating in the charity marathon.

Each learner contributed P10, while parents and teachers paid P20 to participate in the marathon. Ends
