' Newly tatooed do not donate blood '
22 May 2023
People who have new tattoos cannot donate blood.
Public Relations Officer at the Francistown National Blood Transfusion department, Ms Sophie Rebang said in an interview that people with new tattoos were considered a risk to transmit blood diseases. Ms Rebang said body arts such as tattoos could introduce foreign materials into the body.
She said such individuals could only donate after six months from the date of the procedure.
Ms Rebang explained that donated blood was screened for diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B and C as well as syphilis, as it was feared that they could be contracted through blood contaminated by a piercing. END
