District No. 17 Officer Commanding, Senior Superintendent Victor Nlebesi confirmed the incident in an interview, saying the man who originated from Maun and lived at Rwee ward in Shakawe, was with a companion in a fishing mission when the incident happened on April 25.

Senior Supt Nlebesi said the man was trying to set his fishing net when the canoe they were in overturned, causing the man to lose balance and drown.

He added that the deceased’s companion called for help and the police and community members went to assist and the man was taken J.P Kavindama Primary Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

Such cases, he said were a course for concern and therefore advised community members to use canoes that were in good condition and for them to be mentally sound when in water. Ends
