Major activities undertaken on the Serule-Selebi Phikwe reseal and road marking of over a stretch of 60km are complete, Parliament has heard.
Answering a parliamentary question on Tuesday, Minister of Transport and Public Works, Mr Eric Molale said the activities were undertaken over a period of 12 months that spanned from July 2019 to July 2020.
He said the major activities included pre-treatment, reseal and road marking with reflectors of the entire road section.
However, Mr Molale said the 16km of stretch was not done owing to shortage of funds.
“Road marking and reflector installation activities of bout 16km were left out due to shortage of funds because funds were diverted to resealing works.
There were some errors in the qualification of the Bill, which omitted pre-coating of surfacing stones and hence the diversion,” he explained.
The minister acknowledged shortage of road markings and reflectors on the road, which he said could adversely affect road users, particularly visibility at night that may contribute to occurence of accidents.
Mr Molale further told Parliament that the ministry was procuring the rehabilitation of Mmadinare-Robelela roads and had included the road marking and reflective studs for 16km of the Serule-Selebi Phikwe road.
“The project is at a vetting stage of the procurement and anticipated implementation by July,” he said.
Member of Parliament for Selebi Phikwe West, Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse had asked the minister to describe and explain the state of Serule-Selebi Phikwe road.
Mr Keorapetse also wanted the minister to elaborate on the recent works done on the road and whether they were complete.
He further wanted the minister to speak to lack of road marking and reflectors on some parts of the Damuchojena junction close to Serule disease control barrier, how such impacted on drivers, especially at night and when the situation would be rectified. ENDS
