No need for supplies officers in primary schools
03 Apr 2023
There are no frequent cash flow transactions at any primary school that warrant or call for recruitment of supplies officers or bursars, Local government and rural development assistant minister has said.
Answering a question in Parliament recently, Ms Talita Monnakgotla said such was the case with primary schools around the country.
“There are no frequent cash flow transactions at any primary school that warrant or call for recruitment of supplies officers or bursars, save for the P10 000 annual handy man funds, that is accounted for by the school head,” Ms Monnakgotla explained. She said the ministry, through councils, provided procurement of goods and services through their supplies units.
However, she said the ministry would, funds permitting, consider recruitment of supplies officers or bursars for Selebi Phikwe primary schools and countrywide.
“Should the need arise, recruitment will be considered alongside other schools countrywide through the normal manpower budgeting process, subject to resources availability,” Ms Monnakgotla said.
Selebi Phikwe East, MP Mr Kgoberego Nkawana had said the unavailability of supplies officers or bursars in Selebi Phikwe primary schools increased the heads of department’s workload because they had to carry out the duties of those portfolios and that caused them to miss some classes.
Mr Nkawana wanted to know if there were plans to create positions of supplies officer or bursar in primary schools in Selebi Phikwe. ends
