BDP retains Grootlaagte ward

Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has retained the Grootlaagte ward in a bye-election on Saturday.
Mr Petro Moretlwa was declared a winner after amassing 346 votes ahead of Sehakgamaleng Tjitemisa of Umbrella for Democratic C’hange with 162 votes.
A total of 39 votes went to Mr Kopanelo Theko of Botswana Movemement for Democracy while an independent candidate, Mr Jacob Malesele came third with 10 and eight votes were spoiled.
The seat became vacant following the demise of BDP’s Mr Ezekiel Kajuu early this year.
In his acceptance speech, Mr Moretlwa, maintained the pledge he made during campaign that he would serve residents of Grootlaagte equally and with commitment.
The other contestants accepted defeat. Ends
