Residents elect Ramakhubu as headman of record

Residents of Rakops on Monday elected Mr Ditshego Ramakhubu to the post of headman of record. The post was contested by Messrs Tips Kehetji, Baboni Mosesane and Ditshego Ramakhubu.

Mr Ramakhubu garnered 652 votes, followed by Mr Tips Kehetji’s 171, whilst Baboni Mosesane got 36 votes and 20 were spoilt.

Presiding officer, Court President of Botshabelo ward in Selebi Phikwe, Kgosi Ishmael Legwaila, said Rakops has not had a headman of record since 2018 and three previous elections held in an attempt to fill the post faced petitions from members of the community.

He said the outcome of the elections was the desires of Rakops community and deserved to be accorded respect, adding that selection of a chief through the voting process was a practice exercised across the country in cases where members of community failed to reach a common understanding.

Kgosi Legwaila indicated that only residents of Rakops were eligible to vote and thorough screening was done to avoid any discrepancies. 

He sad voting went well and commended residents for good behaviuor during the day. He cautioned residents against against protesting the  results since elections were fair.

Mr Ramakhubu said he was elated by the confidence and trust residents have on him. shown on him.

 “People were given an opportunity to exercise their rights to vote for their preferred candidates,” he said.

He commended government for taking in to consideration concerns raised by members of the community as they decried some elements of inconsistencies in the previous elections. 

He said they also learnt that it was important to comply with the law and follow legal procedures.

Another candidate Mr Kehetji thanked the residents saying they have exercised the right to vote their preferred candidate, adding he accepted the election outcome. ENDS
