Cyclone Freddy passes without incident

07 Mar 2023

Tropical cyclone, Freddy, which was expected to have an impact of strong winds and storms in some parts of the country has passed without incidents.

The Department of Metrological Services’ chief meteorological officer, Ms Didimalang Seikaneng, said in an interview on Monday that nonetheless, they would continue to monitor its movement and strength.

Furthermore, she said the cyclone did not have any impact on the country even though heavy rainfall was expected in the Chobe, North East and south central parts of the country.

And, Ms Seikaneng said the current clouds seen over some parts of the country had nothing to do with the cyclone.

She said the cyclone made landfall on the coast of Mozambique last week of February and lost its strength thereafter.

“Although the cyclone was initially projected to pose serious heavy rains in some parts of Southern Africa including Botswana, it weakened after landing and changed its trajectory,” she said.

She explained that the cyclone remnants were currently on the channels of Mozambique where it had re-grouped, noting that the re-grouped cyclone would fall on Mozambique on March 11.

Ms Seikaneng further added that the department had forecasted a 30 per cent chance of rainfall in some part of the country and there was no need for the public to worry, adding partly cloudy and hot weather were forecasted from Thursday. ENDS
