Leadership appreciates former councillors

21 Dec 2022

Ghanzi District Council leadership recently visited and paid homage to some former councillors as an acknowledgement for their sacrifice in serving the nation during their tenure.

On behalf of Ghanzi District Council, the chairperson, Mr Jeremiah Tibi visited messrs Richard Eaton, Tjizeka Tjihonge and Ms Gasehete Leatswe, and families of late Messrs Walter Mathuukwane and William Babish.

The chairperson said it was befitting to pay a courtesy visit on first pioneers of the Ghanzi District Council and hand a token of appreciation to them for serving and dedicating their time and resources to the people of Ghanzi during the challenging times.

He said though they led the community during old days, their wisdom still mattered todate.

“If we lost path, a word of wisdom from you would be helpful and being around a wise man is a blessing to us young stars,” he said.

First chairperson of Ghanzi district council, 1966-1968, Mr Eaton said it was always heart-warming when people appreciated ones efforts, especially when still alive.

Advising the current leadership, Mr Eaton said they should learn to listen and establish the needs of the people they were leading.

He said the current leadership should serve the will of people not what the leadership thought was important, saying what they imagined important might be nothing to the community.

Mr Eaton, therefore, said engaging the community was critical in leadership.

Another former councillor, Mr Tjihonge expressed gratitude for Mr Tibi’s gesture, adding that selflessness and resilience were both traits of a good leader.

Mr Tjihonge said the former councillors had done their all to take the country this far and that the time was now for the current crop of leaders to do their part. ENDS
