Department of Roads address Nokaneng road situation

20 Dec 2022

The Department of Roads has liaised with Okavango Sub-district Council to find a temporary solution to maintaining the 37-kilometre road stretch between Nokaneng and Gumare currently in a bad state.

The Council and the Department of Roads North West regional leadership met and entered a written agreement last week while maintenance work started on December 17 and will continue throughout the Christmas holidays.

Okavango Sub-district helps the Department of Roads with materials to improve the Nokaneng-Gumare road accessibility while awaiting the final verdict concerning the impasse between the contractor who was on site and the Ministry of Transport and Public Works.

This was revealed in an interview with Okavango Sub- district Council public relations officer, Mr Ofentse Gaogakwe.

“The council will acquire two tipper trucks, one front loader and 50 mix bags of cement as well as pay truck drivers overtime while the Department of Roads will manage the temporary project,” he said.

Mr Gaogakwe said that the project would also include maintenance of the flood plane in front of Gumare Bus Rank.

The road has been under maintenance since 2019, but the contractor and the Ministry of Transport were currently on a stalemate. ENDS
