Specialised stock theft courts increased to match case prevalence
15 Dec 2022
The number of specialised Stock Theft Courts has been gradually increased to meet the ever-increasing numbers of registered stock theft cases.
In response to a parliamentary question, Minister of Justice, Mr Machana Shamukuni said currently there were 11 stock theft courts presided over by 11 magistrates across the country.
The stock theft courts are based in the magistrates stations of Mochudi, Selebi Phikwe, Jwaneng, Letlhakane, Serowe, Molepolole, Francistown, Hukuntsi, Kanye, Mahalapye and Takatokwane.
Mr Shamukuni explained that the magistrates manning these specialised courts sit on a daily basis to conduct stock theft trials, which were conducted in most instances in the areas or villages where the cases arose.
He said by taking cases to places where they arose from was to afford the public the opportunity to witness justice being dispensed and reduce the cost of bringing witnesses to stations where the court normally sat.
Sefhare/Ramokgonami MP, Dr Kesitegile Gobotswang had wanted an update on the pending stock theft cases and whether the minister would consider setting up special or mobile courts to fast-track the conclusion of outstanding cases. ENDS
