Ghanzi land board to recover arrears

11 Dec 2022

Ghanzi land board has reportedly exceeded its annual land allocation target. Ghanzi district council chairperson, Mr Jerimiah Tibi told the council recently that the board had managed to allocate 2799 against the annual target of 2528 towards the government national target of 100,000 plots.

Mr Tibi said the board was also planning to allocate 509 additional plots by December 2022. He said the board continued to receive a very low number of applications in some villages in the district such as Bere, New Xade, New Xanagas, Karakubis and Ncojane, despite availability of plots.

Meanwhile, Mr Tibi said the Ghanzi land board, which is owed over P16 million by landholders of various business plots, including ranches and small agricultural holdings, would soon approach the land tribunal to recover lease rental arrears.

He said that the tribal land act, 2018 provided for land boards to make application to the land tribunal for enforcement of any of its decisions. He said most debtors had cited various economic challenges for their debt, while some had made payment plans, which they never honoured.

Mr Tibi therefore challenged the councillors to engage community members to visit land board offices to make payment plans and honour them to avoid land repossession He said lease rentals were critical to the land board budget as it complemented the Revenue Support Grant (RSG) from government.  ENDS
