Batawana have welcomed the decision by their paramount chief, Kgosi Tawana Moremi to finally return to the kgotla.

Kgosi Tawana is expected to resume his duties once the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development had given approval.

Batawana regent, Kgosi Kealetile Moremi confirmed in an interview that the general public had unanimously expressed excitement and appreciation for Kgosi Tawana’s return to exercise his calling of serving his tribe.

Kgosi Moremi disclosed that she recently convened a meeting to inform the community about her brother’s decision noting that Batawana had long wanted their kgosi back. 

Kgosi Tawana left the throne to join active politics from which he resigned in 2019.

“Some residents had long called him to reoccupy his place at the kgotla and do his administrative duties since he resigned from active politics, but we experienced a delay,” she explained.

Kgosi Moremi said all the necessary processes had been done and submitted to the relevant authority for approval. 

She was not certain when Kgosi Tawana would resume his duties explaining that they would be guided by the ministry’s response.

Kgosi Babinang Majatsie said the traditional leadership had been longing to see the paramount chief back in office.

He recalled that the former chief’s representative, Kgosi Charles Letsholathebe, had upon his retirement pleaded with Kgosi Tawana to return to the kgotla.

“We were all hopeful that since he had long resigned from politics, he will be returning to bogosi, but that was not happening and we are happy that finally our plea has been answered,” he said.

Asked about Kgosi Kealetile’s future, Kgosi Majatsie was quick to point out that the paramount chief would decide on the issue.

Kgosi Tawana was installed as paramount chief in 1995 but later left for politics, winning a parliamentary seat in 2004.

Since then, his elder sister, Kgosi Kealetile has been holding fort. ENDS
