ABSA Life Botswana, in partnership with the ABSA Group, has donated P75 000 worth of smart boards and 200 memory sticks to Meepong Junior Secondary School.
Handing over the donation on Monday, the general regional development manager (north) at ABSA Life Botswana, Mr Tebogo Monageng said good performance was determined by a conducive environment and the necessary equipment needed for learning, hence their support to the school.
He said the motivation to donate to the school was influenced by the performance of the school over the past years.
He commended the school for its outstanding performance, noting that it attained position one in the 2021 Junior Certificate Examinations.
Furthermore, Mr Monageng said the closure of the BCL Mine did not only affect mine employees, but also Selebi Phikwe schools as parents could no longer afford providing their children with all their educational requirements and necessities.
He said since the economy of Selebi Phikwe was struggling, Meepong and other schools could not get support from the business community and that they relied solely on government.
In addition, he said the COVID-19 pandemic made the situation worse for the already struggling families and businesses.
He commended the school for its good performance despite the challenges and applauded teachers and pupils for a job well done.
Receiving the donation, the school head, Mr Thulaganyo Mbulawa expressed gratitude, saying the donation would provide the much needed relief on the education sector.
He said the shortage of learning equipment had affected pupils, especially after the closure of the mine and that the donation came at the right time.
“The management and staff of Meepong looks forward to a continued working relationship with ABSA Life Botswana,” he said.
The Parents Teachers Association chairperson, Mr Kgomotso Senatla thanked ABSA Life for the donation, saying it would help improve teaching and learning at the school.
He also said the school was faced with challenges such as shortage of teaching staff and that the assistance of stakeholders was needed to maintain good results. ENDS
