Desert Sands promotes tree planting

Planting trees is important and beneficial in everyday life, says project director of Desert Sands, Ms Lemme Chali.
Speaking during a donation of 20 trees to Watershed Shopping Mall in Mahalapye on Friday, Ms Chali said the aim was to promote tree planting in the country.
She said they intended to donate to all schools in Mahalapye.
Ms Chali said the donation to the mall was important as it was the first in Mahalapye and the trees gave the town a facelift it deserved.
She said they wanted the project to be community-led as it would illustrate the slogan ‘lets make Botswana green.’
Mahalapye forestry officer, Mr Itumeleng Motswidinyane applauded Deserts Sands for their contribution to efforts to make the country green.
He noted that the national tree planting day was commemorated every year on the last Saturday of November. He added that the aim was to bring awareness to communities about the importance of trees.
He said this year’s theme was: Forest and Sustainable Production and Consumption and that the tree of the year was Mokgalo.
The forestry officer said trees were important in many respects including decorating the environment, acting as wind breakers and a source of food and firewood. He said multiply them was important because as the population increased tree usage also increased.
Receiving the donation, the facility specialist at Letlole La Rona Limited, Mr Otsetswe Mongudi appreciated the gift and promised that they would take good care of the trees.
He added that Watershed Mall valued nature and that they kept their environment clean and attractive at all times.
He also said humans would always depend on trees and that it was important to ensure that they were taken care of and planted. ENDS
