Natural catastrophe revisits Sowa Town
22 Nov 2022
Sowa Town has been hit by a storm for the second time this year.
A hail storm which hit the area Monday afternoon left a trail of destruction at Nxakato Junior Secondary School, Sowa Town deputy district commissioner Mr Tsaone Nkarabang confirmed in an interview with BOPA yesterday.
In March, another fierce storm damaged power lines and destroyed vegetation in the town.
Mr Nkarabang said this week’s storm blew away the rooftop of a temporary structure erected to relieve boarding facilities congestion in compliance with COVID-19 pandemic social distancing protocol.Strong winds ripped off the roof, leaving 42 learners without shelter, he said.
The structure, Mr Nkarabang explained, served as a girls’ hostel with three rooms each accommodating 14 pupils.
He said there were no injuries while the learners had been moved to another hostel recently vacated by Form Threes on completion of their examinations.
Meanwhile the Ministry of Education’s technical services unit was in the process of mobilising resources for removing the blown away roof from the rooftop of the boys’ hostel where it landed.
Mr Nkarabang said two of the school’s power lines were also damaged and as a result Botswana Power Corporation had switched off the electricity. Ends
