Moroka urges men toretrospect

21 Nov 2022

Men have been challenged to reverse the decline in ethical leadership both at societal and institutional levels.

In commemoration of International Men’s Day in Francistown on Friday, Francistown High Court Judge Lot Moroka said the country was facing numerous challenges which were mostly traceable to masculinity crises.

“It is important for a man to have a quality that is based on ethical integrity as ethical leadership is critical to avoid abuse,” he said.  He noted the high levels of crime particularly intense and invasive ones which he said have robbed many women and children of a chance to feel loved and protected.

Justice Moroka, therefore, called upon men to have a good character embraced with the fear of God.  Compared to the olden days when men used to shoulder the whole responsibility of family welfare making them sole providers for the family, he said nowadays people were living in a far different world.

He said women in today’s world were empowered to make decisions, something which makes men feel they have lost their economic power. With this, he said, the community has to strive for positive conversation around such issues to create balance and understanding.

For his part, the Mayor of Francistown Mr Godisang Radisigo blamed the influence of patriarchy on gender roles saying they have significantly led to gender and inequalities and gender-based violence.

Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture District Coordinator in Francistown Ms Tiny Tamasiga-Gontse said the objective of the day was to promote models who were living decent honest lives.

She said the positive contributions made by men in society should be celebrated as part of the efforts to create a safer and better world.
