All must ensure childrens wellbeing - Morwaeng

20 Nov 2022

Individuals and communities must  go all out to contribute to the well-being of children across the country.

Speaking at Masiela Trust Fund gala dinner in Gaborone on Saturday, Minister for State President, Mr Kabo Morwaeng, said the soaring statistics of child abuse must be reversed.

“We need to treat all these kids like they are our biological kids. We need to really care for them,” said Mr Morwaeng.

In recent times, he said, news about children’s issues were more sad and horrific instead of being positive.

Therefore, the minister implored all to strive towards changing this pattern to ensure more great news about children.

Minister Morwaeng said in most abuse cases, perpetrators were known but often protected based on family relations.

He said some perpetrators were breadwinners, therefore, family members were reluctant to report them.

“For those of us doing something positive, let me commend you but still ask if are we doing enough for our children, especially in this country. I believe we can do more and better,” the minister added.

Mr Morwaeng said, through Masiela Trust Fund, government had used and incorporated partners to keep children under optimum care and protection, adding there was need for more stakeholders to come on board.

He urged stakeholders to join hands to make the world a better place for children.

He said failure to care for and protect children could destroy the future of the country.

The minister acknowledged former president, Dr Festus Mogae, for doing a lot to ensure the protection of Batswana, especially children as he declared war against the scourging HIV/AIDS pandemic during his tenure.

Mr Morwaeng said Dr Mogae initiated Masiela Trust Fund and NACA during his time, a gesture he deemed to be a profound achievement that saved the country. ENDS
