Setlalekgosi calls for church support in GBV fight

15 Nov 2022

Various churches in Serowe in collaboration with Botswana Christian AIDS Intervention Program (BOCAIP), recently held prayers to raise awareness on road safety, diseases and crime ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays.

The event started with a five-kilometre walk from Saverite supermarket to Serowe/Orapa junction, where people converged and prayed against road accidents, alcohol and drug abuse, Gender Based Violence (GBV), HIV/AIDS, as well as for the country’s leadership and rain.

The theme of the event was: Road Safety Festive Pre Prayer-Session.

Churches and communities were urged to continue praying for an end to HIV/AIDS, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), road accidents, COVID-19 and GBV.

“You must make prayer your everyday routine as it brings results, including healing in relation to mental and social problems affecting our people,” said Councillor Molefhi Setlalekgosi of Serokolwane ward, who was the guest speaker.

Mr Setlalekgosi said people ought to curb social ills and also help stop all the harmful beliefs and practices that promote them.

He encouraged the churches to ensure that their teachings and doctrines drive people towards good behaviour, to avoid harmful practices, adding that the church should promote good health amongst its members and the community at large.

He commended the church for having held the prayers consistently and also appealed to drivers to desist from drinking and driving and to avoid speeding.

Mr Setlalekgosi also advised drivers to get enough rest ahead of their journeys to avoid fatigue, which was one of the factors that caused road accidents.

The church was also encouraged to support the government in its initiatives to end GBV and come up with innovative ways to sensitise members on issues relating to the scourge.  ENDS
