14 Nov 2022

Regular exercise has the potential to bring about good mental health and emotional wellbeing.

Being physically active can improve one’s brain health, help manage weight, reduce the risk of disease, strengthen bones and muscles, as well as improve ability to do everyday activities, says acting Bangwato paramount chief, Kgosi Serogola Seretse.

Speaking at the launch of the Serowe College of Education Aerobics Club on Saturday, Kgosi Seretse said exercise was one of the important life activities as it had countless benefits.

He cited building fitness levels, reducing the risk of serious illnesses and heart disease, enhancing mental health, relieving stress, fighting depression and strengthening the immune system as some of the benefits of exercise.

Kgosi Seretse said regular exercise could help ease depression and anxiety by releasing natural brain chemicals that enhance a sense of well-being.

“It can help you gain confidence, get more social interaction and cope in a healthy way,” he said.

He said activities, which involved choosing to handle everyday activities in such a way that they became small exercise opportunities could help people who were too busy to exercise.

Aerobic exercise could also help with weight loss, he added

Tamasane Councillor, who is also the chairperson of central district committee of aerobics clubs, Mr David Ikanyeng said eating a balanced diet, regular exercise, avoiding tobacco and drugs and rest were key to a healthy lifestyle. He said bodies were like machines that required a balance of protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, minerals and water to stay in good working order. ENDS
